OpenAI Requires Payment for Additional AI Video Creations on the Sora App

OpenAI is introducing a paid model for its Sora app, signaling the end of unlimited free AI video generations. Users will now need to purchase additional video credits once daily limits are reached, marking a significant shift in how the platform monetises its AI capabilities.

OpenAI has implemented a monetisation layer on its Sora app for iOS, moving away from the previously unrestricted free access. This change was confirmed by a company executive, who stated that users can now pay for extra AI video generations after exceeding their daily limit. The company says that monetisation is necessary to support the platform’s growth and ensure financial sustainability.

How the New Payment System Works

Bill Peebles, Head of Sora at OpenAI, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that users can buy additional video generations starting immediately. Each purchase costs $4 (approximately ₹350) for 10 extra video generations. There is no limit on the number of add-ons a user can buy, allowing unlimited AI video creation for those willing to pay.

Daily Generation Limits

For users who choose not to purchase extra credits, daily rate limits apply. The free tier, ChatGPT Plus, and Teams subscribers are allowed 30 free video generations per day, while Pro users can generate up to 100 videos daily. Any generation beyond these limits will require purchasing the $4 add-on.

Why OpenAI Introduced Monetisation

Peebles explained that offering unlimited free AI video generations has become financially unsustainable. By charging power users who frequently use the platform, OpenAI can maintain service quality and accommodate future growth. He also mentioned that this change allows the company to manage server loads more effectively without overburdening the platform.

Future Rate Limit Adjustments

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to reduce daily rate limits across all subscription tiers, meaning users will generate fewer free videos over time. This gradual reduction is part of a larger strategy to encourage monetisation while balancing server capacity and operational costs.

Monetising Copyrighted Content

Another upcoming monetisation feature will involve content that includes copyrighted characters. Currently, Sora’s Cameo feature allows users to create videos featuring other people or fictional characters using text prompts. Soon, if users want to Cameo copyrighted characters or videos of others, they will need to pay an additional fee.

Peebles noted that this system will prioritise early platform adopters and ensure revenue sharing with creators and rights holders. This step aligns Sora with copyright regulations and supports creators financially.
